Shadow of Life


I was flying high up in the sky. It was recess at school and I needed to get away. I was annoyed with my teachers and homework.

My name is Scaren. It means “Feather of the hawk.” I’m a slightly short fourteen year old with black hair and bright green eyes. I hate school like any teen but I’m not just any teen. My right hand has a flame tattoo going up it. I don’t know where it came from. I’ve had it since I could remember. I don’t have any friends, I don’t hang out with people. I don’t have any parents, I was raised in an orphanage.
I remember when I was around ten years old I saw a girl and her dad in a field. Her dad changed into a bright orange tiger. I never knew what that was about until I found out I could do the same. I’m a hawk daemon so that means I can change into a red tailed hawk at will. You might think I would run around showing off or something  but there are people looking for me. Well any daemon. They’re called daemon hunters. I’ve heard of a few daemons being killed by them. Killing a daemon is a very terrible thing to do. You will be cursed but blessed. You’ll never feel again but you can turn into the daemon you killed at will.
I watched as kids ran around playing tag or just sitting in the sun making daisy chains. I saw a few boys point at me and pretend to shoot me. I saw a girl around my age sitting alone in the field. She was different. Her hair had ruby beads in it and she looked like she hated the world. I heard the bell ring. I waited till the rest of the kids went in to the school then landed and changed back.
I sat in class. I heard a fly buzzing in the window and the drone of the teacher. I fell asleep. I was flying above a forest. in the trees I saw people, no, daemon hunters jumping from tree to tree. I saw a girl. The same girl that I saw at school. She changed into a tiger! A white tiger! She ran then just stopped. I flew right past. She turned and ran the other way. I saw as she scooped up a rat and put it in her backpack.
She ran the her house and locked the door. I sat at a window and watched as she pulled the rat out of her backpack and held it by the tail. She put it down and it changed into a human! How many daemons are there? I- WHAM! I fell off my chair and after looking around I saw the whole class was watching me. “W-what?” I asked getting up. “I heard you moaning. Were you asleep?” it was the teacher. “Er, ya.” I said and got back on my chair.
The lunch bell rang and I grabbed my lunch. I watched the kids messing around and laughing. “Uh, could I sit here?” it was the girl from recess! “Er, sure.” I said as she grabbed a chair and sat beside me. “I know what you are.” she said in a low voice. “W-what?” I said almost falling off my chair again. “I know who you are. Are you busy after school?” she asked taking another bite of her sandwich. “Well no I’m not.” “Ok you know the field in the middle of the forest?” “Ya-“ ”meet there.” she said then went back to her class.
I flew over the forest. It was the same forest in my dream. I saw the field. I landed and changed back to a human. Then I saw a white tiger walk out of the forest. She had a backpack.
“So what’s your name?” she asked changing back to a human and sitting in front of me. “My name is Scaren. Yours?” “Ty Lee” “so, er, you’re a tiger daemon?” I asked. Then a rat ran past and hid be hide Ty Lee. “What the-?” she grabbed the rat by the tail and it changed into a human! “Ty Lee! You have to help me!” he said looking scared. “Why? What happened?” she asked. “The hunters are going to kill me!”
